Allegheny woodrats (Neotoma magister) are a state threatened species that inhabit steep rocky/talus slopes, boulder fields, or caves in a forest interior matrix in the Appalachian Mountains. We have been distributing anthelmintic baits at Allegheny woodrat sites during key times in the raccoon roundworm life cycle to deworm raccoons and address the threat of this parasite to remaining Allegheny woodrat populations. Some remaining Allegheny woodrat sites in Pennsylvania are located on DCNR land in Bucktail Natural Area and the Tuscarora State Forest. For this project, we worked with PGC and DCNR staff to deploy anthelmintic bait dispensers at key woodrat sites in both locations during summer 2023.
