Ecological drivers of evolutionary variation in spotted salamander (Ambystoma maculatum) egg mass coloration
This study looks at egg mass colorations of spotted salamander. It hypothesizes that the white more protects developing embryos from harmful UV radiation. The approach includes several objectives: 1. Estimate morph frequency from at least 30 ponds within each PA study site (Rothrock State Forest, Michaux State Forest, Forbes State Forest, multiple State Game Lands, Pymatuning Laboratory of Ecology). 2. Measure ecological covariates for each pond: pond depth, ponds size, wood frog density, egg predator density, and water chemistry (dissolved organic carbon concentration (DOC), pH, temperature, salinity, and chlorophyll A). 3. Collect genomic data for resolution of genetic control over the visible polymorphism.
