This is a request to conduct research to use a ground penetrating radar unit and excavate several soil pits in Michaux State Forest near the Green Cabin prehistoric quarry site. Project will address the following research questions:
1. Is Site located on a periglacial mass wasting feature (e.g. solifluction or gelifluction lobe)?
2. What is the internal structure of the feature (e.g. internal sorting, layering)?
3. What is the relative age of the structure?
4. Does the ground penetrating radar data accurately capture the structure of the feature?
5. What is the thickness of the transported material that makes up the landform and did the quarry pits reach bedrock?
6. Is there vertical variation in lithic texture and/or weathering that may indicate why prehistoric populations quarried for subsurface materials rather than outcrop materials?
7. Can GPR be used to examine the subsurface characteristics of prehistoric quarries and can this technique be used on other quarry sites?
