Investigators from Penn State Altoona College, the Riparia wetlands research lab at Penn State 12 University Park, and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service’s Northeast Fisheries Center conducted a 13 survey of emergent infectious disease in green frog (Lithobates clamitans melanota) tadpoles 14 found in wetlands throughout the state of Pennsylvania. In 2013 and 2014, we used molecular 15 genetics techniques to screen tadpoles for ranavirus (a DNA iridiovirus) and the chytrid fungus 16 Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis (Bd) from 12 naturally occurring reference wetlands, and 12 17 human-created mitigation wetlands. Ranavirus was detected in one reference wetland, and one 18 mitigated wetland, and both wetlands were located in the Ridge and Valley ecoregion in the 19 state.
