The Pennsylvania Amphibian & Reptile Survey (PARS) is a joint program of the
Pennsylvania Fish & Boat Commission and The Mid-Atlantic Center for Herpetology
and Conservation (MACHAC), with additional funding provided by the Wild Resources
Conservation Program (WRCP) of the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and
Natural Resources. The WRCP-sponsored portion of PARS provided for the creation of a
central database associated with an online data collection tool as well as the resources to
collect and evaluate amphibian and reptile data from a variety of sources. This resulted in
the evaluation of 100,996 records from all available sources. Of these records, 41,963
were considered unverified records due to the due absence of suitable vouchers or
supporting collection data. A total of 60,762 specimen records with suitable vouchers and
appropriate documentation were collected from all sources. At-risk (tracked) species
accounted for 11,919 of the reviewed specimen records. Accounting for record overlap in
multiple data sources, the project provides 7,815 at-risk species specimen records for
entry into state databases. The creation of a central database, combined with a userfriendly
data collection tool will increase the understanding of species distributions and
status and will be a vital tool for future amphibian and reptile management.
