For this project, we pursued three objectives with the ultimate goal of improving landscape-level, collaborative prescribed fire management and planning in Pennsylvania for the health of our forests and ecosystems. First, we conducted a comprehensive review of the role of fire in Pennsylvania’s three most important fire adapted communities: oak forests, barrens, and grasslands. We then reviewed the literature surrounding natural (esp. lightning strikes) and man-made fire and disturbance history in Pennsylvania, and used this information to draft meaningful interview questions for prescribed fire professionals to better understand how landscape-level fire management can be successful. Second, we conducted a series of interviews with representatives of Pennsylvania’s land management agencies and conservation organizations: DCNR Parks, DCNR Forestry, PA Game Commission, The Nature Conservancy, and others. In these interviews, we worked to better understand: 1) the details of fire management goals from each agency or organization, 2) what would be necessary to achieve management goals using prescribed fire, 3) where are the opportunities for increased collaboration and broader application of prescribed fire. Third, we used information from the first 2 objectives to explore opportunities for landscape-level collaboration and multi-agency coordination in an effort to increase the amount of coordinated prescribed fire in Pennsylvania’s forests.
